| During a
recent meeting in Philadelphia, Foundation President Judith Roales and
Charles Myers, the Army Corps of Engineers Project Director for Harbor
of Refuge, took a field trip to Corps warehouses at Fort
Mifflin. Purpose of the trip: TO SEE THE DOOR!
Roales later told other Foundation Directors, "It's
beautiful!" This was the first time any of the Foundation
members had seen the new door, since its planned installation last
fall was cancelled after storms took out the dock and made it
impossible for the Corps to get the door onto the lighthouse.
"Beautiful" might be a bit strong; but to those working
for several years to get the old door and rusted framework replaced,
it certainly is a welcome sight to see the new pieces ready to be
installed at the lighthouse. Serious planning is now underway to
have the dock replaced and enlarged to accommodate Corps workers by
early May.

Foundation Closes the Door
On Highly Successful Campaign
The Foundation's year-long campaign to raise more than
$12,000 to finance the replacement of the main doorway at Harbor of
Refuge Lighthouse and carry out major preservation work on the entire
doorway system ended with calendar year 2008.
The campaign was total success, spurting over the top
of the goal in the last days of the year.
While most of the contributions came from individual
donors, generous grants were also received from the Delaware
Preservation Fund and the Lewes chamber of Commerce and Visitors
Bureau. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Philadelphia District
and Railway Specialties Corp. of Bristol, PA made major contributions
with the manufacturing and installation of the door. You
can preview the plaque that will be erected at the lighthouse to honor
donors by clicking here.
Installation was planned for last fall, but could not
be accomplished because of foul weather. It is now planned for
early spring.
