On Friday, September 1 Delaware River & Bay Lighthouse Foundation hosted a trip to Harbor of Refuge Light for U.S. Senator Tom Carper, Lieutenant Colonel Kristen Dahle, Commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Philadelphia Division, and Shawn Garvin, Secretary of Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC). Also present were their support staffs and several Foundation board members. The trip was planned to allow our guests to view the current condition of the light, and especially the breakwater on which it sits. The US Army Corps of Engineers is charged with maintenance of the breakwater, and it was important for everyone to see the erosion of stones below the lighthouse and at the ocean end of the breakwater. Despite cool temperatures and windy conditions – which actually showed everyone the harsh conditions the lighthouse endures - the trip was both informative and enjoyable for everyone attending. Our sincere thanks to Senator Carper, Colonel Dahle, and Secretary Garvin for taking time from their busy schedules to make the trip! Photos courtesy of Barb Moulinier, Rick Ziegler, and John Gordon.
